Shamanic Musings-The Call of the Web

By Earthwindwalker Powers

She heard the call of the drum that leads to her transformation…. a heartbeat deep within leading her to a sacred place. There were others around but she did not focus on them. She focused on her breath and her heartbeat, the words lost in the silence of the grass, in this place between the earth and the sky. A messenger appeared on the ground…. a spider with an 8 on his back appeared at her feet. She watched as the spider walked towards the east…. she followed him there to a grove of trees that beckoned. She sat at the edge of the grove and looked within, a pattern emerged as the trees breathed their song. Her eyes closed and images appeared, of spider legs creating a web within and around the trees. The spider spoke, her voice clear but firm. We are all connected in a web of life, each drop of water connects to the dirt beneath our feet, each blade of grass burst forth from this marriage of the two elements…. the strands sway grasping each breath of life and connecting to each other…a subtle tug responds in kind…the web wavers but stands firm becoming stronger. Prisms of color spring from within each life, subtle hues glistening in the sunlight. The wind blows through her hair, playfully caresses it and she feels reborn, her heart blooms and cries in delight as each strand of the web moves around her body. Soft but strong, yielding slightly as she moves her way through the branches and the roots of the trees. She is calm and content, in awe of the beauty of the mother. Her eyes fall to the pages in her hand, writing flows from her fingers, a picture emerges, the spider rests in the middle of the webs, cascades of red and gold flow from her chest spinning the threads that flows from her body and connects to the trees. The observer moves forward and becomes one with the grandmother, the pulse of life flows through her body and the web is woven, the strands streaming from her fingers which become legs and the silken touch of the web caresses her face. We are all one, we are all interwoven, our fates entwined. Fear should not enter your thoughts, young one, as you are protected by millions. Pinpricks of light fills your body with warmth. Peace is found there within the web of time, within the body of the weaver. She is the weaver of life and destiny, bound by the universe to create. Connections are made, but just a sliver, a silken caress of a dream fills your soul and calmness flows through you. You are the creator of your life, of your fate, the power is within you. Your soul has seen a thousand lifetimes, each one a little closer to the pattern of the universe, an awakening of the mind and body. You become the keeper of your story, the writer of your soul.  As she is filled with wonder and awe, she looks down onto the skin of the trees, to the fibers of paper, the words flow and a spider ally appears, tiny yet significant, a message given. She breathes in and shares her gratitude for the lesson. Onto the next adventure, her soul renewed and ready to begin this new weave in the tapestry of the web. Her heart soars and she becomes one with the universe.

Animal Symbolism

Blog for today: Animal Symbolism.

Since animals have prevailed in my life this weekend, I’ve decided to add animal symbolism to today’s blog. I will start with the animals I’ve encountered this past weekend as they appeared to me different ways.

Animal symbolism to me means that animals have a message that they want to give you. Whether you are having an physical experience or dreams, they mean to give you a message if you know where to look.

I usually go to online resources to find my answer. Usually something jumps out at me. It’s like my tarot reading, I visualize what the card means, check with my resource and something pops out at me and I put it all together.

Today’s animals that I’m going to start with are:

Take a look at the next paragraphs for the meanings that I found and then I will write what my interpretation.

Overwhelmingly, cultural consensus on fox animal symbolism deals with:

  • cunning
  • strategy
  • quick-thinking
  • adaptability
  • cleverness
  • wisdom

Additional perspectives and cultural viewpoints on the fox animal meanings are as follows:

In China, fox animal symbolism revolved around the afterlife. Lore has it that a fox sighting was thought to be a signal from the spirits of the deceased.

Fox animal symbolism takes a turn of intelligence in the Celtic realm, as the Celts believed the fox to be a guide, and was honored for its wisdom. The Celts understood the fox knows the woods intimately, and they would rely upon the fox as their guide in the spirit world.

In Japan, the fox was considered one of the rain spirits, and a messenger of Inari the rice god. Here the fox also symbolizes longevity and protection from evil.

In Native American lore, fox animal symbolism deals with two interpretations. One perspective (Northern tribes) observes the fox as a wise and noble messenger. The other (Plains tribes) views the fox as a trickster playing pranks, or worse – luring one to demise.

Other generalized fox symbolic meanings deal with

  • focus
  • determination
  • right-action

It is noteworthy to observe the fox while it is on the hunt. We see its entire body is pointed like an arrow – straight and tightly aimed. This is a symbolic message for us to set a determined, and powerfully focused mindset in order to “hit the target” of our desires.

The red in the fox is representative of a solar emblem. As a solar emblem the fox animal symbolism deals with:

  • passion
  • desire
  • intensity
  • expression

The fox encourages us to think outside of the box and use our intelligence in different, creative ways. The fox also brings us a message to try to approach our circumstances differently that we normally would. Be aware of some of our habits, and try a different angle of action.

The fox also a reminder that we must utilize all of our resources (seen and unseen) in order to accomplish our goals. Sometimes this means calling upon some unorthodox methods.

Furthermore, the fox is a sign to be mindful of our surroundings.

Immaculate shapeshifters and incredibly adaptable, the fox beckons us to not make too many waves but rather, adapt to our surroundings, blend into it, and use our surroundings (and circumstances) to our advantage.

It should be obvious from this summary that fox animal symbolism goes far beyond what we may see on the surface. On the contrary, the fox has an incredible amount of knowledge and wisdom to share with us if/when we are willing to be still for the teachings.

Spend some meditative time with the spirit of the fox – odds are you will be amazed at the powerful insight this regal creature has to offer you.

The Crane is legendary in China for being the prince of all feathered creature on earth. Next to the Phoenix (also listed on this page), the Crane is the most favored all Chinese bird symbols. The Crane is the ancient symbol for longevity because of its exceptionally long life span. In many legends, the spirits ride on cranes, which are also said to bear the souls of the departed to the heavens.

Symbolism of DragonfliesAs a creature of the wind, the dragonlfy totem represents change. It’s iridescent wings are incredibly sensitive to the slightest breeze, and so we are reminded to heed where the proverbial wind blows – lest we run into stormy weather.

Dragonflies are also creatures of the water, and any creature whose habitat is in, or around water carries symbolism relative the the subconscious, or “dreaming” mind and thoughts.

This is because in the animal world, water is symbolic of the subconscious mind (“deeper mind,” “dreaming mind”) and relates to the thoughts we have in relaxed/meditative/sleeping/subconscious states.

Quick-list animal symbolism of the dragonfly:

  • prosperity
  • good luck
  • strength
  • peace
  • harmony
  • purity

These symbolic meanings of dragonfly are particularly associated in Asian (Japan) and Native American (Plains region) circles.

Dragonflies carry messages that deal with deeper thought – and they ask that we pay attention to our deeper thoughts and desires.

Further symbolic insect meaning of dragonfly comes into play when we observe the dragonfly’s mode of transportation as it skitters across the top of water surfaces. This implies that our deeper thoughts are surfacing and we must be mindful of the outcome we wish to have.

The dragonfly is a reminder that when our deeper thoughts rise to the surface we must pay attention – there are lessons to be learned, and we are also reminded that what we think is directly proportionate to what we “see on the surface.” …In short, our thoughts (even the deeper ones that we might not be as in-touch with as we are with our conscious thoughts) are responsible for what we see in our lives – in our physical surroundings.

The dragonfly gives us a very powerful meditation tool. Close your eyes, and focus on a thought – let it rise to the surface of your mind’s ocean – see that thought float lightly up to the water’s surface. Now upon the top of a smooth, calm glass-like surface – visualize that thought moving across that water – sliding across – smooth and fast.

This exercise is useful when we want to visualize positive outcomes in a situation. We see the thought of hope happily moving across an ocean of peace (peaceful mind) and skitting to a perfect outcome.

Lastly it should be noted that the Dragonfly lives a short life, and it knows it must live to the fullest with what it has. This lesson is huge for each of us. When you see a dragonfly, be aware of the gifts it has to offer by keeping its animal totem meanings in mind.

I hope you have enjoyed these observations on the animal symbolism of the dragonfly

My intrepretation of these symbols in regards to my experience are as follows:

My message:

Wisdom is to be found in heavens as well as heart and spirit and this will lead to peace and harmony in ones inner spiritual self.

I used to keep a journal of all the animals I encountered on a daily basis to see what messages they are trying to tell me.

It’s very simple really. Write things down and then check online for the meanings and pick the ones that “pop” out at you.

Thank you for taking the time to read my musings on things and hope you visit our blog frequently as I try to update daily.

Peace and balance,

Heather “Earthwindwalker” Powers
